The Waterfront Park in Charleston, South Carolina, is a wonderful place for people to enjoy. It sits along the Cooper River and offers visitors a chance to enjoy breathtaking views of the harbor. In addition to the waterfront view, the park is filled with interesting features, such as large fountains, benches, and swings. One of the highlights of the park is its two large water fountains. These fountains are designed to be interactive, and you can also play with them by pouring water into the basin. Another feature is the Palmetto Tree Fountain, which is a very popular photo op.
The park also includes a pier that extends into the Cooper River. This pier has porch swings and picnic tables. Pedestrians can also access the park through the North Adger’s Wharf. At the far end of the pier, there is a floating dock that provides unobstructed views of the Ravenel Bridge and the Charleston Harbor.
During the 1980s, the city of Charleston embarked on an extensive downtown revitalization plan. One of the plans was to build an eight-acre linear park along the Cooper River. This project was funded by the private sector, which helped bring it to completion. Lowe Construction was a joint partner with the City of Charleston.
In addition to the new park, the lower King Street District plan was put in place. It called for the closing of four blocks of Concord Street to traffic. Eight small gardens were created in its place. A brick path was added to the street to facilitate pedestrian travel towards the park. The plan also recommended keeping the waterfront open to the public.
Although the waterfront has seen several changes in the past, the Waterfront Park is still a great place to take a stroll. Visitors can relax under a canopy of trees and stroll along the wide green lawns that surround the waterfront. Also, you can enjoy a walk through the beautiful landscaped gardens.
In 2007, the park was awarded a Landmark Award by the American Society of Landscape Architects. The park is also home to two fountains, one of which is a pineapple fountain. If you’re looking for a place to go for a family picnic or a romantic stroll, this is the park for you.
In addition to the park, you can take a ride on the Charleston Water Taxi. From the park, you can take a short trip to Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant. When the Cooper Hotel is completed, the north side of the park will be extended.
The park is open from 7:30 am to 9:30 pm on weekdays and 7:30 am to 10:30 pm on weekends. It is also free to the public. However, it is not pet friendly.
